Audi Sport has elevated the sportiness of the Audi RS 4 Avant and Audi RS 5 Sportback with the introduction of the new competition plus package.

Audi competition plus package RS4 Avant and RS5 Sportback

  • New race-derived coilover suspension, RS sports exhaust system, and enhanced performance offer an exhilarating driving experience.
  • Mannering: “I anticipate these will become highly sought-after collectibles for those fortunate enough to secure one.”
  • Limited availability: New Audi RS 4 Avant and Audi RS 5 Sportback competition plus packages set to arrive mid-2024.

Set to arrive in showrooms in Australia mid-2024, this package is filled with enhancements that not only refine the car’s appearance but also deliver a more emotional driving experience.

In the course of some proverbial fine-tuning, Audi Sport has increased the sportiness of the Audi RS 4 Avant and Audi RS 5 Sportback. Soon to be available in Australia, the new competition plus package is bursting with extras that both sharpen the cars’ appearance and make for a more emotional driving experience. The Audi RS 4 Avant and RS 5 Sportback competition plus is available for ordering in limited numbers from Audi dealers now.

“I anticipate these will become highly sought-after collectibles for those fortunate enough to secure one,” notes Jeff Mannering, Director Audi Australia. “These specially-packaged cars offer an elevated level of performance to what was already a powerhouse duo.”

With its coilover suspension (RS sport suspension pro), offered for the first time, the competition plus package boasts a maximum in dynamics and driving fun while maintaining its suitability for everyday use.

Reduced insulation between the engine compartment and the interior means the RS 4 Avant and RS 5 Sportback will thrill with an exciting, next-level sound experience. The potent biturbo V6 has 331 kW of power from 5,700 to 6,700 rpm and torque of 600 Nm from 1,900 to 5,000 rpm.

Audi competition plus package RS4 Avant and RS5 Sportback

Audi Sport Next-level sport performance

Offered for the first time on these models, the RS sport suspension pro offers manually adjustable coilover suspension for an ideal spread between comfort and performance. As a result, even longer distances can be covered comfortably with all available assistance systems and without limitations.

Owners who choose this coilover suspension will receive their RS 4 Avant or RS 5 Sportback ex-factory with a ride height that is 10 mm lower than standard RS models. Plus, the ride height can be manually lowered by an additional 10 mm for an overall ride height that is 20 mm lower than the series standard.

A higher spring rate, three-way adjustable dampers, and stiffer stabilisers heighten the general driving experience and help shorten lap times for those taking their drive to the track. More precise and more agile handling contribute to the elevated level of performance of these understated powerhouses.

Engine performance

The Audi RS 4 Avant with the competition plus package goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, an improvement of 0.2 seconds over the series standard. The Audi RS 5 Sportback does the sprint in 3.8 seconds, an improvement of 0.1 seconds. Further, both competition plus packages also feature an increased maximum speed of 290 km/h.

Responsive steering

The dynamic steering is fixed at a ratio of 1:13.1. With all these enhancements, Audi Sport GmbH has created unerring handling and even greater tracking. The enhanced quattro sport differential ensures an increased degree of agility and driving fun – especially in the “dynamic” driving mode.

A new data set in the control unit with changed parameters switches the emphasis to the rear. Moreover, the updated software in the transmission control unit, only in combination with the competition plus packages, makes for reduced shifting times and a noticeably increased spread between the various driving modes.

The dynamics are further enhanced through specially tuned ABS software, which reduces the braking distance from 100 km/h by up to two metres in combination with the optional Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres.

Sports exhaust

Developed specially for the competition plus packages, Audi Sport GmbH is presenting the new RS sports exhaust system plus with tailpipes in matt black.

These boast a more intense sound pattern, not only through the exhaust system itself, but especially due to the reduced insulation between the engine compartment and interior, a modification that also lessens the car’s weight by about eight kilograms.

Fine-tuning to the engine control unit software makes for tighter load changes in S mode when the “dynamic” drive select is active – further increasing the emotional feedback.

Audi Sport – An enhanced look

Optional RS front bucket seats in Dinamica is also available for the first time in this model generation, for those wanting to further elevate their track stance. These seats, when selected, are paired with the pre-existing RS design package in red.

at $3,400, this adds an Alcantara steering wheel, shifter knob, and centre console knee pads with contrasting stitching in crescendo red, seat belts in black with red edging, and front RS logo floor mats in black with contrasting red stitching.

The Dinamica material is made of 45 percent recycled PET fibres; about 215 grams of PET fibres are processed per seat. The four rings on the hood and the trunk lid as well as the model lettering underscore the sporty character with their glossy black finish.

For the first time for the RS 4 and RS 5, the exterior is now available in a matching crystal effect Sebring Black finish, which is also now available across the RS 4 and RS 5 range, with or without the competition plus package applied. Customers can further highlight the sporty look of their RS 4 Avant or RS 5 Sportback competition plus by choosing between a 20” 5-Y spoke milled, gloss turned wheel or a black metallic, milled alternative, or opt to add Pirelli P Zero Corsa high-performance tyres that were designed both for the road and the racetrack.

Audi ownership

Both the RS 4 Avant and RS 5 Sportback with competition plus also come with a peace-of-mind five-year warranty and twelve years manufacturer warranty for bodywork against corrosion perforation for new vehicles. Alongside warranty, Audi Australia also includes a complimentary five-year Audi roadside assistance as part of the purchase of an RS 4 Avant and RS 5 Sportback.

Five-year service plans are available for both of these models and customers also have the opportunity to purchase Audi Advantage, an Audi-exclusive program that allows owners to purchase two-year packages to extend their servicing, warranty and roadside assistance.

New vehicle customers are able to purchase two-year programs back-to-back at the time of purchase, or at a later date up to 8 years old, to extend the current manufacturer warranty beyond the current 5-year timeframe. This allows new vehicle owners the security of a full factory warranty for up to 9 years, which is transferable to future owners of their vehicle.

Audi owners also receive a complementary membership during their warranty period to Audi Experience, Audi Australia’s bespoke loyalty program that offers access to exclusive national events, intimate Audi Ambassador experiences and premium partner offers.

GMSV has released images of a right-hand drive Model Year 25 GMC Yukon on the road in Australia, only days after teaser images were released in the US.

“The GMC Yukon has been at Premoso for a few months as we start gearing up the remanufacturing process,” said Jess Bala, Managing Director, GM Australia & New Zealand.

“It’s exciting that another vehicle is joining the GMSV line-up – one that features a full complement of eight-seats and offers great towing capability.

“Vehicle development post-remanufacturing is progressing extremely well and we’re on track to deliver the new model to customers in first-half of 2025.”

As advised in November, GMSV will be offering the highly equipped GMC Yukon Denali at dealerships in Australia and New Zealand.

“Now that the camouflage has come off, we’ll be able to embark on more extensive on-road, local right-hand-drive development and testing,” said Ms. Bala.

 Third anniversary

GMSV has celebrated its third anniversary with a significant announcement, revealing the GMC Yukon, a full-size premium SUV with seating for eight, will be joining the marque’s showroom portfolio, as well as several developments associated with existing model lines.

“GMSV has made a real impression in the local market and, thanks to this success, we’ve been able to make a strong business case for additional models and this latest arrival is testament to these achievements,” said Greg Rowe, Director of GMSV.

GMSV_Hometile_GMCYUKON

“I’m excited to confirm the new GMC Yukon, will be remanufactured here in Melbourne and will be available in Australia and New Zealand.”

The announcement is coincident with the 8,000th remanufactured Chevrolet Silverado emerging from the Premoso facility in Dandenong.

“The GMSV journey started in November 2020 with the launch of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, together with the announcement of the very first manufactured right-hand drive Corvette, the C8,” said Mr Rowe.

MY23 Chevrolet Silverado_ZR2 (002)

“The popularity of GMSV and the vehicles we sell through our network has grown substantially in a few short years and this success was what inspired us to investigate the possibility of adding an all-new model to the line-up.”

GMSV dealerships will offer the highly-equipped GMC Yukon Denali and the first examples of the new model are anticipated to arrive in showrooms early 2025, with pricing and specification to be confirmed shortly before the start of sales.

Concurrent with the announcement of the new GMC Yukon, GMSV also took the opportunity to update plans relating to other model developments, including Corvette E-Ray, MY24 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 upgrades and MY24 Chevrolet Silverado HD.

Greg Rowe_GMSV

MY24 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 upgrades

Chevrolet Silverado enthusiasts will be pleased to know a new GM performance exhaust will be added to both models in the MY24 1500 range, the ZR2 and LTZ Premium.

“The MY24 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 will now be standard with an active performance exhaust system providing customers the flexibility of a ‘standard’ exhaust experience – or dialling up the limiter to hear that traditional V8 rumble,” said Mr Rowe.

MY23 Chevrolet Silverado_Interior (002)

In another massive development, the new MY24 ZR2 will receive a swath of added equipment, including Rear Camera Mirror, Multi-Colour 15” Diagonal Head-Up Display, Power Tilt/Telescoping steering column, Adaptive Cruise Control along with a Bose ® Premium Sound System.

Chevrolet Silverado HD

MY24 Chevrolet Silverado HD

As announced in September, the new MY24 Chevrolet Silverado HD is scheduled to start the remanufacturing process at Dandenong this month, with the first wave of vehicles anticipated to arrive in showrooms as early as December.

Cannon Alpha – All-New GWM Cannon Alpha will arrive Down Under around mid-year.

Pikes Peak – IONIQ 5 N to compete in Electric Production SUV class at Pikes Peak International Hill Climb  IONIQ5N-Testingfor2024PikesPeak01

  • Production IONIQ 5 N fully equipped to perform at Pikes Peak
  • A second modified IONIQ 5 N will be revealed prior to the ADAC RAVENOL 24h Nürburgring on May 30

With a new generation of owners now getting behind the wheel of the IONIQ 5 N. Hyundai will spark even more excitement at the 102nd running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) on June 23, 2024. Two 478kW IONIQ 5 N cars will go after the record in the Electric Production SUV class as part of a four-car effort.

“We are returning to the mountain stronger than we have left it. With a class leading electric SUV in the form of IONIQ 5 N,” said Till Wartenberg, head of N Brand and Motorsport. “Hyundai has a history of proving new technologies and products at Pikes Peak. Going all the way back to 1992 and the IONIQ 5 N brings that concept to high performance electric cars. The production spec IONIQ 5 N will demonstrate what customers can expect from their vehicles.”

The drivers of the IONIQ 5 N vehicles in the Electric Production SUV class are Paul Dallenbach and Ron Zaras. Dallenbach is an eleven-time PPIHC winner and set an overall record in 1993. Zaras is a PPIHC rookie and the newest team member. Zaras, a media personality and former Hoonigan executive, was recently chosen to showcase the story of a motorsport enthusiast preparing for this massive challenge of competing at Pikes Peak.

Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

“As a lifelong fan of rallying, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb has been a bucket list event to take part in from the first time I watched the film ‘Climb Dance’ on a 56k Internet connection,” said Zaras. “So, competing here for my first time ever in the IONIQ 5 N – with the support of the excellent teams at Hyundai – is an incredible honour. I’m thrilled to share my journey from young spectator to first time competitor along the way; challenging as that path may be.”

In addition, Hyundai will debut a modified specification IONIQ 5 N to compete at PPIHC prior to the ADAC RAVENOL 24h Nürburgring on May 30. Two of these additional IONIQ 5 N models will be driven by Dani Sordo and Robin Shute. Shute is a four-time overall winner and King of the Mountain title holder at Pikes Peak. Sordo is a Spanish World Rally Championship driver for Hyundai Motorsport.

Hyundai chose to pursue the PPHIC Electric Production SUV class record with a IONIQ 5 N. Because it embodies the racetrack capability of every N performance vehicle. IONIQ 5 N has been tested in extreme temperatures and locations. And developed and tuned specifically at the Nürburgring Nordschleife for enhanced racetrack capability.

It is supported by technologies such as:

  • structural enhancements,
  • World Rally Championship-inspired integrated drive axles,
  • increased thermal management,
  • N-tuned brakes, and
  • an industry leading brake regenerative force of 0.6G.

standard IONIQ 5 N

Due to the rigorous test process for the standard IONIQ 5 N, only minor updates were made to comply with the rules from a safety perspective. The driver’s seat was replaced with a Recaro Pro Racer SPA Hans seat. The seat belts are Sabelt six-point HANS compatible. The rear seats were removed, and a roll cage and fire suppression system were installed.

In every other way, the IONIQ 5 N being prepared for Pikes Peak is a standard IONIQ 5 N. In the future, the red paint will be swapped with a new eye-catching Hyundai N livery.

Kia Tasman – Kia has confirmed the name of its highly anticipated Ute: the Tasman. The Kia Tasman is the first Kia product with a name analogous to Australia. Further cementing its status as the most Australian Kia yet.

  • Kia names its first-ever Ute Tasman – the most Australian Kia yet
  • The Kia Tasman is the first Kia product to be bestowed an Australian-inspired name
  • Name inspired by the Tasman Sea and Abel Tasman, the namesake explorer who discovered Australia’s island state, Tasmania
  • The Kia Tasman will combine work-focused capability with lifestyle-orientated versatility

Unlike a lot of out competitor websites that have speculated on what may or may not be, we are reporting what Kia have said and is available for them. Also we don’t have studio generated designs of what it may look like.

Selected from a pool of names sourced from Kia’s global markets, ‘Tasman’ was initially proposed by Kia Australia. And ultimately chosen for its connection to the Tasman Sea and Dutch explorer Abel Tasman. Who discovered the rugged landscapes of Tasmania. Each of these elements lends itself to a spirit of enduring toughness, grit, and resilience. Reflecting the rugged character and matching capabilities of the Kia Tasman.

Kia Australia’s Chief Executive Officer, Damien Meredith, said “The team at Kia Australia has been working closely with the Research and Development team at headquarters to develop Tasman. A vehicle we believe will meet the needs of our unique market. So it’s very rewarding that it has been granted an Australian-inspired name befitting its personality.”

Ambitious sales targets

“We have strong ambitions for Tasman in our market, and the fact that its name has such distinct links to our region is evidence of Kia Australia’s instrumental role in its development and future success.“

The Tasman represents Kia’s bold first step into the Ute market, designed with a range of work, trade, and leisure pursuits in mind. With the debut of the brand’s first-ever Ute. Kia expands its ICE lineup beyond sedans, SUVs, and MPVs, setting the stage for a comprehensive range of vehicles.

Lofirst confirmed its venture into the local Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) market in in March of this year, releasing the ‘Kia’s getting a ute’ TVC campaign in which 20 of Australia’s most iconic sporting figures debated what the Kia ute should be named. Kia Australia is taking Expressions of Interest via the Kia Australia website to enable people to stay informed leading up to the vehicle’s global launch in 2025.

Possible engine and drivetrain choices – Kia Tasman

Kia has been here before, albeit a long time ago. The Kia Sorento was previously a robust dual range 4WD SUV. Then it went soft.

Kia Sorento 4WD VS Hyundai Santa Fe Video review

Kia have available the tried and tested 2.2L 4 Cylinder turbo diesel engine matched to a smooth 8 speed Automatic Transmission.

This produces power of 148kW @ 2,800 rpm and torque of 440Nm between 1,750 – 2,750 rpm.

That immediately places it alongside the Isuzu D-Max, Mazda BT-50, Nissan Navara.

The benchmark though for the HiLux and 2.0L Ford Ranger is now 150kW/500Nm

This is the engine we will most likely see first up.

We can but hope to see the Tasman come out with something approaching the HiLux GR Sports 165kW/550Nm. That will be cool

They also have the 3.5L V6 Petrol. This produces power of 200kW @ 6,3000 rpm and torque of 332Nm at 6,000 rpm. Again matched to the same 8 Sp AT.

Its unlikely we will see this engine given how the world is moving away from pure petrol engines and that the 3.5L V6 doesn’t have AWD in any of the models its in currently.

The 1.6T Hybrid engine would be an interesting choice. But at power of 132kW @ 5,500 rpm and torque of 265Nm between 1,500 – 4,500 rpm. Its a good engine but a bit lightweight for a Ute.

Obviously Kia have the electric motor out of the EV9, but its heavy and would be impractical for a Ute.

Kia’s getting a Ute: 20 Australian sporting icons come together in new launch campaign – update 4th March 2024

  • 20 Australian sporting icons star in TV commercial to launch the Kia Ute
  • The campaign confirms Kia Australia’s entry into the Australian Ute market
  • Expressions of Interest officially open for the new Kia Ute due in 2025

Kia Australia has confirmed its entry into the local Light Commercial Vehicle market with the launch of a new TV commercial featuring 20 of Australia’s most iconic sporting figures.

Coinciding with the LCV announcement, Kia will also commence taking Expressions of Interest on their website for any Australian looking to be kept up to date during the vehicle’s road to launch.

The backdrop for the advertisement is an iconic Australian pub where the sporting legends debate what the Kia Ute should be named. The Kia Ute is due to be unveiled in late 2024, with the first Australian examples expected to hit local roads in 2025.

Kia Australia Chief Executive Officer, Damien Meredith said, “Kia Australia has always been very candid about our desire to bring a Light Commercial Vehicle to the local market, so it is with great excitement that we are taking an important step towards it becoming a reality.”

Kia Ute Expressions of interest

“We are now officially taking Expressions of Interest (EOI) on the Kia Australia website, for both private and fleet customers, and we invite all-loving Australians to sign up and join us on the journey.”

“As an incentive, the EOI group will be kept up to date of the latest news and developments from now, right up until its Australian launch in 2025.”

“This includes an extensive local ride and handling program, covering tens of thousands of unrelenting Aussie kilometres, to ensure it meets the hard-working requirements of the Aussie public.”

Kia Australia General Manager of Marketing, Dean Norbiato said that the inspiration for the TVC came from the time-honoured Aussie tradition of everyone having a nickname.

“We were looking for a unique and quintessentially Aussie way to launch Kia’s most Australian product ever – our ute – and what better way than to bring together our country’s most iconic themes – sporting heroes, nicknames and an old-fashioned Aussie watering hole,” Mr Norbiato said.

TV Commercial

The campaign is arguably the biggest cast of famous faces in an Australian TV commercial, boasting between them:

  • 29 Premierships,
  • four Paralympic gold medals,
  • four World Championships,
  • 26 Grand Slams,
  • 1 Golden Slam,
  • three Melbourne Cups,
  • six sporting captains,
  • two Australians of the Year,
  • two Young Australians of the Year and
  • nine Hall of Fame entrants.

New car sales –  Records for new vehicle sales continue to be broken with the March result of 109,647 surpassing the previous March record of 106,988 which was achieved in 2018.
YTD Sales March 2024

The January to March result of 304,452 sales represents the best-ever first quarter for new vehicle sales, an increase of 13.2 per cent on the first quarter in 2023.

FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said that it was remarkable that nine of the past 12 months had seen the industry achieve record sales results.  Since April 2023, the industry had delivered 1,252,230 new vehicles to the market.

“This is a terrific result for the sector however, all car brands are well aware that these results cannot be taken for granted,” Mr Weber said.  “We need to factor in the ongoing cost of living pressures and the challenges for industry and consumers that will emerge with the introduction of the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) in less than nine months.”

YTD Sales by segments march 2024

Breakdown by fuel and segment

The SUV segment accounted for 58.9 per cent of sales while the Passenger segment was down to 16.1 per cent compared with 2023 at 17.7 per cent.  The Light Commercial segment fell to 21.0 per cent from 22.6 per cent.

Battery electric vehicles made up 9.5 per cent of new vehicle sales up from 6.8 per cent in March 2023.  Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid sales increased compared with March 2023 recording a 14.0 per cent share compared with 6.0 per cent in 2023. Sales of electrified vehicles in March made up 23.5 per cent of the total market demonstrating the continuing evolution of technology and increasing consumer preference in response to the challenges of decarbonisation.

“A fuel efficiency standard is long overdue. However, we remain concerned at the speed and magnitude of the change for both manufacturers and more importantly, consumers.

“The car makers will respond, however it will take time to develop new products. Especially in the large SUV and Light Commercial segments, that meet expectations in terms of price, performance and emissions. Noting these vehicles make up more than one third of new vehicle sales in Australia.

“We look forward to working with the Government regarding the administration of the proposed NVES and the development of critical supporting activities. Such as the development of an effective national recharging network for electric vehicles,” Mr Weber said.
